    Hi,
    I am a new to WP. I am trying to setup a page (not a post).
    The page edit menu shows only three templates default, showcase and sidebar.
    I want a page with three columns with ability to add widgets to the left and right column with the main content in the middle.
    How do I do it? Do I need a different template (I am at default 2011)? Or I can import a page template without changing a general template?

    please create a child theme of Twenty Eleven to work with;

    you will need to create a page template with three columns.

    there are a few child themes with three columns available which you might want to check out (for instance NomNom by Zeaks) - however I don't know if these have the three columns as template or general.
