When you buy and install a theme template, can a user change the name that appears on the theme's tab along the admin dashboard? I have tried to change the name in functions.php and it crashes the site and I get an error message. I just want my site's domain name to appear there. Could it mean that there are other things going on behind the scenes when this theme is running? The name can be changed on the style.css which I have tested but changed it back for updating purposes. I see that the admin and function files are very long and intensive so I cannot decipher all of the code. Any insight is appreciated.

That depends upon whether theme is released under GPL. If you are unsure, ask the theme's vendor.
