Changing layout: Defining individual posts, columns? (3 posts)

I use the origin theme, but want to change the layout:
I want one featured post at the top of the page, at full width of the page. Below that I want three separate columns: the left and centre column each displaying a list of posts for a different category, and the right column as an empty sidebar for widgets - what do I need to do to achieve this?
I've experimented with themes, plugins and drag n drop editors but cannot achieve the design & functionality I want, so I'll do it manually. So how do I go about it? I'm sorry if this has already been asked.

You could create a custom template --

Thank you WPyogi, I guess it is a complex problem. I've looked at the link but will try making a template when I've learnt more about the coding.

    Upwards and onwards.
