Changing host for my WordPress blogg - BIG problems (10 posts)

    Howdy, people!

My hope is in your hands! :-)

Since almost a year I'm running an WordPress blogg, called "I hell-mans värld", on http://www.hell-man.se.

By a number of reasons I'm about to change host from http://www.jx.se, to http://www.one.com/sv/.

This work is getting me grey hair! :-)

I've allready pointed the nameservers to my new host, and thought I had learnt how to move the blogg there. But, oh no...

I had prepared for the wove by taking backup of my database, and by, over FTP, backup all files of the blogg. From what I'd understood, it would be best and easiest to do the move by this step:

    * Make sure to have the latest version of WordPress on the blogg at my old host before making the backup.
    * Backup the database.
    * Backup all files with FTP.
    * Pointing the nameservers to my new host.
    * Installing WordPress (same version - the latest) on my new host.
    * Exporting the database from my old host to my new, over phpMyAdmin.
    * Moving my files from the old host to my new, over FTP.

That I thought would be it, but it didn't worked.

After talking to some people, in other forums, I understood there is an export function buildt in in WordPress, and according to some of these people, they claim that to be the easiest way to move a WordPress blogg between two hosts.

I accessed the blogg from my old host from an secondary domain, http://d88279.u26.jx.se

But, I couldn't login to it. As soon as I tried, I were moves to the blogg from my new host.

New questions on another forum, and the information that I had to edit the database from phpMyAdmin. Completely new area for me, but I found one place to do this, in the file "wp_options" --> "siteurl". That gave me tha possibility to login to the blogg at the old host, but the one on this other forum said that he belivied that I must change this at two places in the database. Probarbly he is right, cause now I can login to the blogg at the old host, but as soon as I'm clicking on a post, I'm jumping to the blog from my old host.

So, is there any heroe out there who can tell me where to change this?

And, after fixing so that I now can login to the blogg at my old host, I tried to export the blogg. That seemed to went fine - I got an 3,76 Mb XML-file. That gave me new hope. I logged in to the blogg from my new host, and hoped it would be as easy to import the XML-file, but no. Trying to import the blogg that way, just put me to an blank page in the WordPress Editor. Anyone having a idea of this? Why is it like that?

So, this is an open question... I'm greatful for any help, of any kind!

    * How schould you hav done if you were in my position?

    * What could I've done wrong?

    * Wich way to move the blogg is the best - by making backup of database and files, or by using the inbuildt export/import function? And what could be the reason why any of this ways has worked for me?

GREAT thanks in advance!! Just ask me for any additional information, and I will give you that.

    /L

    You are overcomplicating it.
    Here are some thoughts:
    - you install the DB backup on the new location; that's why you made it in the first place, so you don't have to go back to the old host!
    - http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/ - this is the guide for changing the two URI values in the DB

Next time read before doing anything:

Thanks, rudolf45!! Yes, I know I'm making it to complicated... I understand it schould be quite easy, but my problem is that it ain't working as easy as it schould. That's the reason why I'm making it complicated.

I'll try to use your information, and will be back and tell about the result.

But still, other ideas are welcome!

I'm in the middle of testing this one more time...

    But, yet one more question...

    * At my old host, my filestructure were (is) with an map called "hell-man.se" in the root, under wich all files is placed. That places my blogg in the root of my domain, directly at http://www.hell-man.se.

    * If putting the files that way at my new host, has shown that the blogg instead is placed under http://www.hell-man.se/hell-man.se.

How could it be like that? And is that of any point for me in my work with moving the blogg? Or is it just for me to put everything under the root at my new host, instead of in the map "hell-man.se"?

    THANKS!!

    NOW we're talking!! :-)

Now it seems to work, almost!! The "only" thing not working is the country specific Swedish letters. Is there anyone out there who can solve that for me??

    Thanks!!

An additional information, to the above issue...

Now I tried to post a new bloggpost, and suddenly the Swedish letters worked fine! So, it seems that it's only on old posts and on manues and so, that it does not work.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!!

    Possible causes:
Is the encoding the same on the old blogg and the new blog (utf-8)?

As I see it, on the old blog you have iso-8859-1 encoding, and now on the location it is the default utf-8. You can't have it like this.
(did an experiment: in FF you can select the encoding, under View, and if switched to Western iso-8859-1, then everything is just fine - except the last post made on the new location, which has utf-8.)

    My suggestion:
    - delete that last post
    - go into options > reading and switch the encoding

    Thanks, rudolf45!!

Now I've got it working. Quite strange, but it looking in the old blogg, from my old host, it says utf-8, and the same if on my old host logging in to phpMyAdmin, AND when checking my in the settings for my blogg at my new host. BUT, logging in to phpMyAdmin at my new host, gives iso-8859-1.

I solved it by in the settings for my blog att my new host, change to iso-8859-1, and after that manually editing the last post, wich were ok before this change, but not efter it. After this, the blogg now is completely ok.

How would you have done? Would you have kept it like this? Or would you go for changing to utf-8 in the phpMyAdmin at my new host, and after that instll it all over again? The reason why I'm asking this is that I saw that they are recomending to use utf-8. Is there any reason to be afraid that iso-8859-1 could be a future problem?

If not, I will stay with it as it is now.

    Thanks!!
