Changing Domain Name (9 posts)

I'm currently running a wordpress site from a host and I am about to transfer the domain to it (the new host). Is it possible for me to change the domain in the database now, so that when the domain actually transfers, it will automatically go to the new site I created?

Also, I was reading through the changing domain name docs. and it wasn't very clear so I'll ask:

Can I simply change the website in my admin panel? Will that take care of all the database entries too? I don't mind doing it manually if that's not the case.

    Thanks!

It is not clear from what you've written as to whether you've read this:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

I rely on it and have done pretty much everything imaginable in terms of move types. i.e. - with and without changing domain names, changing the URL but not the domain name, to the same and different web servers on the same company's web hosting, and different.

    Didn't see that one... Thanks.

All I did was set my DNS records to my new host, changed the site address to the new URL in the admin panel (can't get back to the admin panel now, but I assume that will change once the DNS records update) and then I searched my Database for all instances of the old URL and changed it to the new URL.

Is that about all I need to do to get this working?

You also need to re-Save Permalinks (if you use them).

You need to change two fields in the Admin panel: WordPress address (URI) and Blog address (URI).

You also need to change wp-config.php if the database name, database user ID and password are not all the same as they used to be.

Use Permalinks, so I'll have to do that (I'll have to wait until I can get back into the admin panel to do that right?)

The second step I did before I searched the DB, that's why I can't get back to the admin panel.

DB username, name, and password are the same, so I'm good there.

    Thanks for your help!

Yes, Saving Permalinks is best done with the Admin Panel.

    Cool thanks!

I think I'm ok though, when I type in the old domain (the temp. one I got from the host since I didn't transfer a domain at that time) I still get my site, but its all plain text (No images or any styling). All my links appear to be correct when I hover over them.

    Hopefully I didn't miss anything :P

Thanks again for all your help! This is much easier than it looks, too many options in some of those links, makes it look confusing lol

So many possibilities when someone says they are moving their web site. Which is why it is also hard to give advice, let alone write the all inclusive documentation you are looking at.
