My website designer set up a redirect inside a index.php file in the root directory to point my domain name to the folder WordPress is installed in. My web host says a better method from a search engine standpoint is to ‘Change WordPress URL’ in the wp_options table in the database.

    Question:
If I delete the redirect folder and ‘Change WordPress URL’ at the database do I need to set up a index.php file or .htaccess file to set up information to point my domain name to the folder WordPress is installed in? Or is this kind of step covered by adjusting the WordPress URL and Site URL in Settings>General in the Dashboard?

Also, I have read the Codex article ‘Changing The Site URL’.

@boite Mails – My old website was a HTML website which was converted to a WordPress website by the new website designer. I believe the redirect was set up to workaround the old website since those files have not been deleted yet.

The best way to do this is to use cpanel (or other host admin tool) and reassign the domain name to the folder WP is in. Changing the WP url and home page url will update links, except for anything you’ve hardcoded. Some hosts restrict repointing the primary domain but should be able to tell you how to do it in the root .htaccess file.
