Change user's default display name? | WordPress.org

Is there a way to change the default user display name for my WordPress install? It defaults to username in all instances, but I want it to default to first name.

I know I can change this on the user profile edit page, but I have hundreds of users that I’m adding by CSV import, so I need a way to automate it.

You could change them with SQL using an UPDATE statement like this:
```
UPDATE wp_users, wp_usermeta
SET display_name = meta_value
WHERE ID = user_id
AND meta_key = 'first_name'
```
BE SURE to back up your database first!

You can change WP to do it, but you’d have to edit code. I’d like to see it in a plugin (or an option in the core), as I think many other people would. See this thread: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/change-default-display-name-1
