Change the style of the permalinks (6 posts)

Right now the permalinks for my posts are something like this:
    http://mywebsite.net/archives/year/month/date/title

But I want them this way for SEO reasons:
    http://mywebsite.net/title

How would I do this? Do I have to modify .htaccess and how? How can I throw a redirect code when someone uses the old style of permalik so that Google knows that I changed it?

What would happen if I write two posts with the same title? Will WordPress detect this and warn me?

You have to change the post´s options

It's quite easy. Simply go into WP Admin → Options → Permalinks.

You'll see an option "Custom, please specify:". In that box, simply enter the following:

    /%postname%

Yeah, I know, but does WordPress send a 301 when someone tries to access the previous permalink?

No, but you can use this plugin to do the 301s.

Oh, and to answer the last part of your post, if you have duplicate titles, WordPress will just append a -2, -3, etc. to the end of the title.

    e.g.:

    /hello-world
    /hello-world-2
    /hello-world-3
