I bought a new domain name that is a better name for my site and more closely resembles my actual business name.

I did this once before after building my site on an unused domain name then transferring to what it is now and the site was broken but Bluehost fixed it.

Now I want to do it again but bluehost said they would not fix it and gave me this link

But i am totally confused as to what I will need to do., ie which part of that codex? do I just need to do the edits in the wp-config.php and the functions.php?

or do I also have to go into my database and change stuff?

    thanks

  • If you read the various options on that page, in each case it tells you exactly which file to edit.

I am just confused as to the differentiation of the options.

What is the extent of the first option? are the edit wp-config.php and edit functions.php 2 different options ? <edit>I guess so that now that i see a thanks to “filosofo” for “that fix”

I think they need to just make it more clear by numbering…option 1, option 2 , …etc.

which is the best way? sounds like either the “edit functions” method #2 ? or the “relocate method” method #3? are they both the same thing? the relocate method says it is used for moving different server. I just want to change the name within my current server.

sorry for being a pain but last time i went through this it was a nightmare when bluehost told me i need to rebuild my site (but then they fixed it)

All of the methods outlined reset the site urls. They only differ in their ease of implementation and the long term editability (is that a word?) of the urls. I’d suggest trying method #2 – Edit functions.php.

Thanks for the clarification, “#2” sounds like the way.

editabilty is a good word (to me) but my FF spell checker does not think so!

    thanks esmi!

    One last question.

I have a child theme and I created a child theme functions.php file.

Does it matter which functions.php file to use?

    thanks again

Use the functions.php file in the currently active theme.
