Change index gallery image links to post address, not galleries

I’m currently thinking that I will use the standard wordpress gallery in order to deal with images. My main problem with it is that in the main/index page, the gallery thumbnails link to the gallery of the three or so images in each post, instead of linking to the post.

Is there a way to change things so that the gallery works like normal on the post pages, but outside in the index, the image can be used as a large button to get to the post about that topic?

Otherwise, is there a simple plugin that I could use instead?
