Hi, I recently started working on a website for a charitable organization in which I'm involved. I decided to use WordPress since I've run a couple of different versions of my personal website on it and find it a good CMS to work with. Seems that I haven't really done anything advanced with it before, though.

I'd like to setup the home page to be a static page and have the blog posts be the news section in a different menu item. I've read an article about moving the wordpress core files but I can't quite wrap my head around what they're saying and how it applies to what I want to do. Can anyone provide help?

To change the homepage to a static page:

In your admin, go to Settings > Reading > front page displays > click 'a static page (select below)', then pick the page you want to appear as your home page.

If Gary Barret's suggestion doesn't work, change the wp_list_pages in header.php
