Change category display order (5 posts)

Is there a way to change the way categories are displayed on the journal?
In the admin panel they are displayed in alphabetical order, which is what I want.
But on the page, it is displayed by ID number, which is determined by the order I create the categories.
Furthermore, is there a way to change the ID numbers? If I delete a category number, then that number is used up forever. Consequently, I have something like ID: 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9. It's not a biggie, but it just bothers the heck out of me.

That link didn't work for me, but I looked it up in the source: use wp_list_cats("sort_column=name")

    So did you just change
    wp_list_cats("sort_column=name")

    to
    wp_list_cats("sort_column=id") ???

Instead of trying to get a response from a thread older than a year :) you could try to check out the template tag's page in the Codex:
