I had a category with a couple of posts and after installing a new theme I uploaded an xml sample file to populate the theme.
However I am finding that my old posts and categories remained and I am unable to delete the category. There is not checkbox and mousing over it does not bring up the 'delete' button. Only 'edit' and 'quick edit'

That category is set as default - you will need to change that first if you want to delete it. You can change the default category under Settings > Writing ("Default Post Category").

thanks for the reply, it's my own fault for not spending more time with the codex. I incorrectly assumed it had something to do with a confusion between the imported data and the old data.
