"category" showing up in my permalink (3 posts)

Every permalink configuration seems to work OK on my site except this one. I cannot access multi-page articles when placed into subcategories:

    /%category%/%postname%/

This struck me as odd so I looked around for any clues being displayed within the links on my site and I found that if I hover my mouse pointer over the category names in my navigation bar, these links are displayed in the following manner:

    sitename/category/categoryname

The word "category" is included when I go to a category and is followed by the actual category name. So, if I visit the category "dogs" and do not click on a post, my URL looks like this:

    http://sitename.com/category/dogs

I would rather it read like this:

    http://sitename.com/dogs

Of course this doesn't address the malfunctioning permalink /%category%/%postname%/ but I'm hoping they are some how related.

WordPress defaults to using 'category' if no base is defined for it. It is annoying, but it's done intentionally as the post name method is known to screw over things.

However, all is not lost. You can use the Advance Permalinks plugin and force it to use that particular structure.

Be warned though, there may be other consequences for it (broken pages). It's really something that's not advised even though it does look cool.

Thanks, I guess I could live with that if my posts weren't broken. When my multipaged posts go into http://sitename.com/category/dogs the article displays fine and I can access all the pages. When my multipaged posts go into http://sitename.com/category/dogs/dachsunds I can only access the first page. If I click on pages past the first, only the first page gets displayed. If I move the post up a category level, say back to http://sitename.com/category/dogs, everything is fine. Any idea why that is happening?
