category showing 'excerpt' of posts (7 posts)

Several days ago I asked the question: What to do and How to change the category section in sidebar so that posts only show a portion of the post. (an excerpt) I received the following answer:
"You need to edit the template that is handling your category page to use the_excerpt instead of the_content

Template_Hierarchy outlines which template files handle what. Depending on your theme, it will vary."

The sidebar template is the only template in which I see category mentioned. However, I don't see the _content anywhere.

Can someone please provide me with more information re: this. Thank you. . . Charlsie
p.s. I read in the 'docs' info. re: this. I'm not tech savy, so didn't understand what to do nor how to do it. And, thank you to whomever it was that replied to my initial request for help!

Well, we'll need to know more.

When you look at your current theme's directory, what files do you have?

HandySolo. . . Is this what you are asking for?

    'Iris' theme files
    Stylesheet
    Popup Comments
    Footer
    Header
    Comments
    Sidebar
    Main Index Template

    Thanks,
    Charlsie

Ya know... let's regroup. Just re-reading your opening post. This part, without a link to your blog, may be what's confused us so far:

What to do and How to change the category section in sidebar so that posts only show a portion of the post.

Are you saying that your sidebar shows complete posts in the category section?

Under the big heading Category in the sidebar is the list of categories. And, within each category is/are the posts that I've designated to go there.

Okay, when I click on a specific category the entire post will show. I would like for only an 'excerpt' of each post to show for the viewer. Then, if viewer wanted to read more, viewer would need to click on the title of post to read entire post.

I apologize for any confusion perhaps due to my not previously using the correct words for what I want.

Take a look if you want at http://www.manifestinguniverse.com
(new blog, or rather 'starting over' after 4 months)

    Thank you!

    Ok, thanks for the link.

Copy your index.php to category.php. In the new category.php, locate "the_content" and change it to "the_excerpt".

Now, let's anticipate your next question. You currently are configured to show one post on the main page. You'll probably want to see more posts on your category page(s), right?

If so, grab this plugin: http://mattread.com/projects/wp-plugins/custom-query-string-plugin/

Thank you, HandySolo, for your instructions and for the plugin. Yes, I'll want all posts to show in each specified category. . . just an excerpt of each, though, as per my request in this thread.

I'll report back later as to whether or not I managed to do what you've instructed me to do. Thanks much, again!
