is it possible to place sperarators between the links with the category list?

I know you can do it when listing the categories a post is listed in, but for the general link list of all the categories is it possible?

You can probably do this in the stylesheet. Would depend on the theme exactly where you'd need to start tweaking. Is this as regards the site linked from your username? If so, which particular area in the sidebar is where you want the separators? Would these be graphics or simply hr tags or borders placed with css?

No, this is for a custom I have made for someone else --

see the tiny links on the top displayed inline?

I've tried to change the list style type to show bullets, or even a custom image, but nothing is working . . .

My live testing area where I applied these style changes is here:

Okay, so you're looking for vertical bars between the category nav links? In general, what I do with this is use the "pipe" symbol (on the backslash key usually, use the shift key) and a couple of non-breaking spaces, like this:

between each link title. You can bold those by using a class in the stylesheet, which can help them stand out a bit better. You COULD do this same sort of thing with a graphic but might be more trouble than it would be worth....

Yeah, but this is being generated by the list cats (http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/list_cats) tag. So it auto-generates all the lists items so I wouldn't be able to insert that between each item . . . :/

Hmm. Well, someone with some experience using template tags would have to help you further then. I never do things that way....
