Forgive me if this has been posted before, I tried a search and looking at older topics.

My theme has a category.php file. I want to be able to view a page such as http://postcardsfrommetrosuburbia.solitaryspaces.com/category/news

That currently leads to a 404 error.

    However, http://postcardsfrommetrosuburbia.solitaryspaces.com/archives/news

brings up a page and lists all the posts in that category.

I'm not sure why it is happening. I am using the Smart Archives plugin so I can have http://postcardsfrommetrosuburbia.solitaryspaces.com/archives as a page to show all my posts in a monthly breakdown.

I tried to set up a rewrite rule to force http://postcardsfrommetrosuburbia.solitaryspaces.com/category/news to redirect to http://postcardsfrommetrosuburbia.solitaryspaces.com/archives/news

but that doesn't appear to be working either.

ANyone have any idea or hints?

I tried setting up the RewriteRule, but still get 404 messages

    RewriteRule ^category/(.+) /archives/$1

I guess your permalink structure has %archives% at the beginning - that's why it works.

Not sure if that is the case, though I may be wrong.

    Using WP 2.0,

My permalink structure is set to in Options>Permalinks

    Date and name based
    ┬╗http://postcardsfrommetrosuburbia.solitaryspaces.com/2006/01/17/sample-post/

And the Optional Category Base line is blank.

I thought to check to see it it was something in my theme causing the problem. It isn't theme related, because it occurs in both my current and the default theme.

Where else would I look for permalink sturcture?

If needed, I can post the output from the Dump Environment plugin. I enabled that and am looking at the source of a 404 error page.

    Lots of info there.
