I've been editing the tulip theme and removing a few things that I didn't like... and now I'm down to fixing the space around the Category listing and the other lists so that there's not a huge space around them. I can't figure out which attribute is attached to it.

Also, keep in mind in WP themes the sidebar, usually, is a huge nested lists system. Googling for "styling nested lists" may give you a lot of insight.
