Support » Plugin: All in One SEO – Best WordPress SEO Plugin – Easily Improve SEO Rankings & Increase Traffic » Category description not showing, shows 1st post description instead

  • After updating to 2.0.1, when I view source of a category page on my website the meta name=”description” is showing the description of the first post in the category instead of the description I listed in my WordPress admin ‘Edit Category’ section for each category.

    Example: http://www.rockitpro.com/category/beatswithhooks/

Description should be “Buy Beats with Hooks featuring original, studio quality vocals for only $24.99 per beat. Download your instrumentals with hooks instantly after purchase.” but instead it’s showing the first post’s description.

This was working fine before I updated the AIOS plugin. How do I fix this?

This is a bug that has been reported and we will release a new update next week to fix this.

Ok thanks. Which version broke it? 2.0 or 2.1? In case I want to revert back to a working version until the next update.

Hi, I’ve got a similar problem after upgrading to 2.0.1. Google Webmaster is reporting duplicate meta descriptions on pages. Checking the source seems to show that AIOSEO is including descriptions from post pages in other pages. See examples below where an auto-generated description from a post is being used elsewhere –

    here

Additionally Google now appears to be indexing archives and tag archives despite them being set as noindex in the AIOSEO general settings.

This last version is a mess. Don’t update unless you’re willing to play Russian roulette with Google.

On some websites my meta titles disappeared. On others categories meta description are gone. And on others AIOSEOP simply doesn’t function anymore, it’s like it’s not there: no meta tags whatsoever.

I haven’t changed anything except for the plugin upgrade.

I liked this plugin for being simple… It’s not simple anymore and it’s definitely not working like it used to.

And what’s up with the plugin appearing in the Dashboard Toolbar AND on the left side panel in the dashboard? I understand one of these is optional, but it’s still bugging me.

Is AIOSEOP trying to copy the Yoast plugin? Because I never liked that one.

    Hi gholem,

Can you please provide specific examples with URLs of where these problems are occurring so that we can take a look and see if they are valid bugs with the plugin.

General feedback doesn’t help plugin developers troubleshoot their plugins, please be very specific so that we can help you.

    Hi wpsmort,

This problem couldn’t wait, on one website I turned to Yoast WordPress SEO (and I’m not crazy about it), on another one I’m testing SEO Ultimate (and I’m beginning to like what I see, although I have a lot of writing to do now) and on third one I rolled back to AIOSEOP v2.0 – which, by the way, works as it should.

Thanks for your help offer though.

I’m rolling back to 2.0 as well, I worked hard to get the #1 spot for a certain keyword so I don’t want to screw that up. Can’t believe this isn’t fixed yet, seems like a pretty big problem wouldn’t you think?

We’ve posted a new release that has bug fixes for these issues. Please let me know if you still experience problems after updating. Please be as specific as possible to help us provide accurate bug fixes.

    Hi wpsmort,

After updating I’m still seeing the issue of the meta description for the most recent blog post being pulled into other pages. You should still be able to see it in the links I provided further up in this thread.

    Cheers

    Hi barkeyo,

The links you provided go to 404 pages,

They do, but why does AIOSEO still include the meta description from the most recent post in them?

The reason for the 404 is that I changed the site’s permalink structure at the end of last year when I tried Yoast’s SEO but eventually settled on AIOSEO. For some reason Google still retains records of the old URLs, despite them not existing or being listed in the sitemap for over 6 months.

    Hi barkeyo,

I’m not sure I understand. That’s a 404 page, it doesn’t have any meta description on it. You should fix that 404 issue though, that’s possibly caused by your theme and how it handles pagination.

What’s the issue with the 404? Other than if you check the source, it appears to include a meta description…

The site is serving a 404 page because the URL Google previously recorded is no longer available due to the permalink structure change,

    Hi barkeyo,

Can you provide an example of where we can view the problem you are reporting. We cannot help you if you provide links that result in a 404 page not found.

The problem you reported where the meta description for archive pages was being pulled from the latest post in the archive has been fixed in the latest release.

    Hi wpsmort,

Sorry maybe I wasn’t clear enough, I’m trying to find out why AIOSEO dumps a meta description into a 404 page.

My original issue was the Meta Description of the most recent post being pulled into other pages. This includes the meta description being included on a 404 page. Google Webmaster is telling me that a number of pages which used to exist, but no longer do and therefore generate a 404, are now including a meta description which is a duplicate of the most recent post.

So Google is highlighting, and potentially penalising, duplicate content being seen on pages which should be simple 404s
