I'd like to be able to have a front page (or archive page) that lists the latest posts under every category. I have tried Dunstan Orchard's technique here but I do not know how to implement it with WordPress. Can anyone help?

Try the narchives.php over at http://weblogtoolscollection.com or search http://wiki.wordpress.org for "archive"
There is a whole bunch of archive hacks out there.

I've tried the wiki. narchives.php seems ok but there's no way to limit the number of entries being output, so that's a no-go. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this using existing functions, huh?

narchives.php is a pretty powerful filter. Are you looking for something that would let you output, say, the 2 most recent posts per category onto a page?

Junesix: exactly. Like a headlines page for each "section" based on categories.

Dunstan actually uses date-based archives showing post titles. If you're looking for something like that, there's Jon's All Archives http://imagesafari.com/hacks/all_archives/
For the category-based "headlines" page that you're referring to, I'll have to figure out a hack or see if anyone else has come up with anything.

Here's your solution. It involves running a separate loop for each category. So if you had 11 categories, you'd be calling 11 separate loops from the mySQL database. If you have a lot of categories, this is going to be very memory-intensive on your server and you might want to think about a different way of organizing your archives index.

Junesix: the multiple loops will work. With only two or three cats. to headline, it'll work for now. Besides I'd be cutting queries by including only post titles for the headlines page. Thank you so so much.
