[resolved] Category Base URL 404 (3 posts)

I have a site where everything works great for the categories so something like the default is http://localhost/wordpress/category/uncategorized/ and other categories are other URLs.

My question is how can I get just plain http://localhost/wordpress/category/ to not be 404? I noticed the theme demos do it too like http://forefrontdemo.wordpress.com/category/artwork/ works but http://forefrontdemo.wordpress.com/category/ is 404.

I would ideally like to code it up to just list the categories and be able to do this for both category and custom taxonomies. If that's not possible would creating a page with "category" as the slug be a valid workaround or create more problems than it solves?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

We ended up using a plugin like http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-no-category-base/ which worked great as "News" was just domain/news instead of domain/category/news and so forth. We just have to be careful not to create pages with the slugs of categories!
