Categories/Products – switching default setting for list style

    I want to switch the list style option on a categories/products page, so that it opens on the vertical columns and people have to choose the horizontal columns themselves if they want to. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Apparently it’s a php coding thing?

    This question above about list style vertical vs. horizontal is on the Transparency theme, in case this goes to a general forum for wordpress.
