Categories SPECIFIC to a custom post type

So I know you can enable categories for a custom post type, but this is the global categories function. And, I know you can enable a custom taxonomy, but I don’t really want to use taxonomies (I don’t like the behaviour for my purposes).

Is there anyway to enable “categories” for a custom post type, that will only be bound to that particular post type, and will not simply draw on global categories?
