   Hello and thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

   I have a complicated category structure, +- 300 categories. I am using the Canvas theme from woothemes.com, which supports custom menus.

   The problem is, in Appearance > Menus, when I search for categories that I know for a fact exist, I get no results.

   Also, some categories may have the same name but a different parent. When I select "View All", the correct hierarchical structure is not displayed. There's no way to be sure I am adding the category parented to a particular top level category.

   Have you tried:

   - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

   - switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

   - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

   - re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.
