I no longer have the option to select a post category in the "new post" screen. Also, in the "post" menu I have no "category" menu item.
Existing posts still retain their assigned categories, and template tags can still display them...just can edit existing post's categories or add a category to new posts.
I don't want to convert my cats to tags, they are not the same thing.
Have you tried:
- deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
- switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?
- resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.
- increasing the available memory?

plugin problem. Page Category Plus V1.1 was the offender. Dont see it on "extend" anymore...or I would mark it broken for WP3. I don't think I need this plugin anymore anyway (site reorganization)

was running ver 2.2 of the Page Category Plus, same issue resolved by turning off. Thanks!
