Clean WordPress (3.8) install – vanilla Canvas theme (5.5.7 – though same problem in previous version – theme update does not fix) – no additional plugins installed.

Advanced Sidebar Pages Menu works fine but Advanced Sidebar Categories Menu does not appear at all (code shows it is not rendering in html).

FYI default WP/Canvas Categories widget works as it should and categories otherwise behaving as expected.

Working on localhost but can take online if required – hoping that as Canvas such a popular framework someone may have some experience of this issue.

    Thanks.

    Hi M One,

The categories widget will display on category archives only unless the option is selected to show on single posts.

Please verify this is not showing up on the above mentioned locations. Please check the display category parent option and verify again. If still not working, please put online and post a link to where it is not working.

    Hope this helps

Hi Mat – maybe I have it wrong. I have 2 post categories set up for testing with a post in each.

I am expecting it to work like the pages menu – ie on the blog index page a list of categories appears that I can use to navigate to category index pages. And on category index pages I am expecting the same (with the active category indicated).

This is not the case – nothing at all appears in the sidebar on blog or category index pages.

HOWEVER – if i check “Include Parent Even With No Children” the title of the widget appears on the category index page with no entries below it but not on the blog index.

Suspect I have the wrong expectations of the functionality here – but if it is not for navigating post categories on the archive and post pages what is it for?

    Hi M One,

This plugin is for displaying the parent and child items of the current location. The Blog page has no child or parent categories. If you would like to display categories on blog pages etc you may use the default WordPress categories widget.

This should be displaying on your category pages and single posts if the option is checked to do so. If it is is not, there is most likely a plugin or theme which is filtering or breaking the output.

    Hope this helps.
