• I realized today that I had a bunch of categories added to my wordpress blog that I never added.

I deleted the ones I could, but one is titled “hostees” and is marked “default” so I can’t delete it.

Does anyone know where this category came from and how I can delete it?

I’ve changed my wordpress password to be on the sife side, btw.

    Thanks!

  • Just change the default category to one you wish to keep. You can do this through Options > Writing then go to the dropdown list and select a new default. Then you should be able to delete ‘hostees’

Yolindsey, I’m a little concerned that categories appeared that you did not add. Does someone else have access to your blog admin panel?

Hi guys, thank you for your responses.

Blaize – I went to the options > writing panel like you suggested and set my default category to the one I wanted. However back in my categories list I still have TWO defaults now. o_o

DianeV – No one else is supposed to have access to my blog admin panel. I’m worried as well…

I guess I’ll just deal w/ it since the phantom category won’t appear on my blog until I add posts to it (which I won’t).

Another option, if you can get into MySQL, is to delete it from the table. It is a mystery though why you have 2 default categories and where the new ones came from…

Hope you get it sorted. 🙂

I’ve had this same problem since the installation of v2.1.3, which seems to handle categories differently than previous versions (maybe this changed in 2.1). I think I’ve figured out what’s going on, but I’m not sure how to resolve it.

Since installing this version, the (only) category I have set up for blogroll links is now showing up in the list of regular categories. I can’t delete the category because it is marked as Default under Manage > Categories (in addition to my default category for posts). Further digging revealed that under Options > Writing there is a drop-down menu for “Default bookmark category.” Changing this switches the category that gets the “extra” Default under Manage > Categories. This would allow me to delete that category… but I’m not sure what effect that would have on my blogroll since all those links are tied to that category!

I tried removing the category from the blogroll links since I don’t really need it, but that doesn’t stick. If I uncheck the category box and apply the changes, the checkmark returns.

Can anyone point me to info on this change in the way categories are handled? How do I get a links category to not show up in the regular category list?

    Thanks!
