Categories as Table of Contents (2 posts)

I currently have all my categories displayed in my index.php page to serve as a "table of contents". In order to display them in 4 subsequent columns i have had to use the exclude parameter in the wp_list_cats tag 4 times!

    My questions:

    1. Is there a better way to call/display categories individually, so as to better control their placement? And the total number of posts per category?
    2. Related to the first question, how could I have individual icons display for each category?

p.s. Incidentally the total number of posts per category do not seem to display entirely with my current optioncount parameter.

Me again after 7 hours and no reply. I have set up my index by category using simple method of linking www.mysite.com/index.php?cat=# , this way I also get to style my table of contents properly but here is the catch.

How can I display the total number of posts next to the category link above?

    Any help/advice deeply appreciated!
