• I am using GlossyBlue 1.4 theme. Only 6 categories of about 10 are visible in the sidebar, although there are post with the unvisible categories. The post show the category, but it is not shown in the sidebar.
And another – maybe related problem: I changed code in the sidebar in order to see all categories including the empty ones, like explained here:
    wordpress.org/support/topic/75742,
but the blog does not show any difference after uploadiing the changed file.
Is there a conflict between the widget-made changes and the php file. I am sorry, but I am new to WP and I am afraid, I did not get some of the main points…

I deactivated WP Navigation Tool (NAVT) and now the categories are complete again.

Well the other question remains: I changed code in the sidebar.php in order to see all categories including the empty ones, like explained here:

but the blog does not show any difference after uploadiing the changed file.

If you use widgets – that overrides whatever changes you make to the sidebar.php files. I.e. no matter what you are editing, changing in the sidebar.php file itself, using widgets will display what is in the widgets.

    Thanks. That explains everything 🙁
I think I cannot mix the modes?
Or can I paste the widgety created code into my sidebar file?

The HTML created by the widget will be static–i.e. it won’t update if you add more categories.

Try downloading a more advanced categories widget from the plugins repository. I’ve seen one on there by a guy called Breukie or something.

I think I cannot mix the modes?

    Actually, you can.
Whatever is OUTSIDE of the if dynamic_sidebar... endif portion, will be displayed regardless.
