I've just done the automatic upgrade to 2.8.6 and none of my categories are showing up besides their associated posts. Luckily I only have 3 categories at the moment. The same applies to my tags.
Has anyone else experienced the same issue in 2.8.6?
Or know of a previous solution?
Have you tried:
- deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
- switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-related problems?
- resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

It's really a 2.8.6 issue. A major one that kept me awake till morning
I used the query suggested at http://www.jauhari.net/how-to-fix-wordpress-26-missing-categories.jsp
But even if you run it new categories may still have missing descriptions.
Also "exclude" post seems also not to be working properly in 2.8.6.
I truly hate this version...
