Logged into my site today http://www.covertmag.com to find out that every post entered to date has lost its category and tag associations - all now reverted to "Uncategorized" with no Tags.
When I go to the Categories section in Posts>Categories in the back end my list of categories has disappeared, and when I try to enter a former category into the list it tells me that "the category already exists" but there are no categories here?
Is this a database problem? Andy why would this happen?
Many thanks if anybody has any ideas.

I am having the same problem, and even some of my advanced blogrolls are not showing up. No idea what the issue is. Anyone out there in WP land who can help/clarify?

and I already tried resetting my permalinks structure to default, still not working.
All my posts are there, but no categories????????????

I just had this problem as well though it did not occur right after an uprade to 2.8.4 It occurred since yesterday and the only thing I can think of is I cleared my widget cache last night. All categories gone. Tags and tag cloud gone. Blogroll gone. I am hoping if my hosting service restores the site to a week ago the issue will be resolved, otherwise I am back to zero.
In the category section of my edit page there are no categories but if I click on frequently used categories I get a list, and if I enter a tag I have used before I get a drop menu of related tags to select from. Super pain. But where are the tags and categories and my blogroll? Real nightmare and it seems I am not alone in this.
