Categories

Hi! I am a newbie trying to set up my first blog.
Is there a way I can have two or more different sets of categories in my sidebar, for example, Categories by Subject, Categories by Author… etc.?
When I include the category widget to the sidebar, it authomatically lists all of the category names. I wish I could edit the list according to my needs, hide some, show some…. Is it possible?
