I am hoping to create an E-Commerce solution using wordpress. Will wordpress be able to handle quite a number of site visits a day without any problem? I understand the main aspect to consider on this matter is the website host. I Simply want to ensure that wordpress system itself would be able to handle a higher number of site visits.

WordPress will handle a lot, and you are right, this is almost 100% dependent on the power of the hosting server. With enough server resources, you can handle anything!

One thing that I’d aks you ot think about though… If you’re going ot be moving into e-commerce in a serious way and having a lot of products, then is WordPress really the best solution for your site? Don’t get me wrong, I use WordPress where ever possible, but it’s not purpose-built for e-commerce, so a lot of that is “tacked on” (for want of a better term) as an afterthought almost. If you’re going to have a few 100 products then it will be OK, but if you’re going to movetowards 1,000’s of products, then you could be better off with a more powerful and feature-rich e-commerce system. If you still want WordPress as well for the SEO benefits, you can always add it on as a blog on top of the other system anyway.

I am still a student so I am new to CMS. So would you be able to let me know what are the best e-commerce systems? Because this project will be for a medium scale departmental store. Its not very big actually but it will have quite a variety of products. I was thinking of using Woo commerce which is a good E commerce tool. But still as I said I am new to this and still learning.

    Thank you for your reply.

Woocommerce is one of the better e-commerce plugins for WordPress around now, so if you are going to use WordPress then that’s the one that I’d suggest.

If you’re thinking about something that’s more of a pure online store, look at Magento or Prestashop. Those are the two bigger players in the field now, and are relatively similar in a lot of ways.

Having said that, each of the systems that I’ve mentioned (including anything based on WordPress) has good and bad parts, and may or may not have features that are required by your client. Even above the base platform, yur clients requirements are by far the most important thing to consider when you make your choice.
