Can't view WordPress site - shows existing site (7 posts)

I installed wordpress into the same directory as a currently existing site, in hopes that I can keep my old site up while I work on the new one. The trouble is, that I cannot view/preview the WordPress site at all. All previews and viewings go to my current html site.
Not sure what to do here.

    Thanks!

    How did you install WordPress?

Did you remove your old site files?

No, the old site files are still there. (need to keep it live while I work on the new one)

I did the 5 minute install.

This isn't an html vs php problem either, I don't think. When I type in my site's address with the direct like to index.php , it still sends me to the current site.

Unfortunately, you'll have to remove the existing index.html file for this to work.

My friend did the same thing and it worked fine. Until I go live, and remove the old site, I just need to be able to have my wordpress point to the worpress pages so I can work on them.

If I create the wordpress in a sub directory, can I move it back to the main page with all the content once I am finished creating it and ready to delete the old site?

you won't be able to see the homepage without removing the index.html (but you could re-add it after viewing your wordpress homepage), anyways if you do something like yourdomainname.com/t it'll bring up a "Not Found" or "No Such URL" from your wordpress site. depending on your permalinks, you should be able to continue working on your website as is without moving it to a sub-directory and be able to see all the other pages/posts.

    Hope that makes sense.

If you want to, you can move WordPress to another directory while you're working on it and move it back when you're done. See this for more info:
