• I have a new site with a fresh install of WP v.3.4.2 and I am unable to re-use existing tags on my posts. I have spent all day on these forums and Googling, but have been unable to resolve the problem.

The Problem – When I select a tag from the drop down list of existing tags and save/publish my post, WP creates an entirely new tag. This happens when creating new posts AND when trying to edit existing posts.

I have deactivated all plugins, reverted to the Twenty Eleven theme, cleared site cache, tried two different browsers, cleared browser cache, cleared entries in database via phpMyAdmin, repaired databases, reset permalink structure, all to no avail.

I then moved to a test site that I set up 3 days ago. It is running WP Beta v.3.5 with the Twenty Twelve theme and 6 plugins installed. Same problem, can’t use existing tags.

On this site, I updated WP v.3.5 to the latest nightly build, deactivated, then deleted all plugins one at a time, retesting after each one. Nothing works.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? How did you fix it?

Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    J Greene

  • where and how does the “new tag” show up on your site? In a tag cloud?

I assume you are talking aout a new instance of the same tag?

Yes, a new instance of the same tag, but, obviously, with a new slug.

The new tag shows up on the tags page, on a new/edit post page in the ‘Choose from the most used tags’, and when you go to add tags to existing posts via Quick Edit by starting to type the tag, then selecting the one you want from the available options. However, it doesn’t accept your selection, but instead creates an entirely new tag.

I thought/hoped perhaps it was only in a list as a result of a query. but Alas..

otherwise I’ve never heard of anythng like that. I’m stumped as to how to troubleshoot it.

tags are taxonomies, like catgories. Can you still assign categories without a new instance?

    Thanks anyway.

I’ve never encountered this before either, I’m stumped.

Yes, categories are fine, it’s only the tags that are having problems.
