Suddenly today, for no apparent reason, I can't upload any images as I have for years?! The image seems to "crunch" all the way across, but then I get an error message -" Unable to create directory..." and a question "Is the parent directory writable to the server?" And I have no idea how to resolve this issue.

Change the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.
