Read the sticky at the top of this page. Pay attention to #9.
Sorry I don’t understand what sticky?
Hi I’ve seen and read the sticky and have implemented a lot of the suggestions the error message is still coming up. My miscellaneous settings say : wordpress/wp-content
I’ve deleted the caches and I’ve also re uploaded a new version of wordpress to see if that helps but still to no avail any other ideas
Log onto you host account. Using C-panel or whatever they provide to manage files. Go to wordpress/wp-content/uploads. In the uploads directory create a folder named 2009. In the 2009 folder create a folder named 03. If asked or given the choice all those folders including uploads should have permissions set to 755.
When done try to FTP any small file to uploads/2009/03. It should be successful. Go back to WP and upload your images.
Hi thanks for getting back to me I added the folders you suggested using my ftp client, I also uploaded a test image however when I tried to upload images from my wordpress blog dashboard I got the same warning as before. Any other ideas thanks in advance
You can ftp the images to 2009/03 and then in editor add images from media library. Also you should try the browser uploader.
This is very frustrating I have uploaded images into the 2009/03 folder. The only options in the media library are search media, filter and save all changes, none of which bring up any of the images I have ftp’d so I don’t really understand your instruction .
Also you suggested trying the browser uploader I have on countless occasions but keep getting the same message
Unable to create directory /hsphere/local/home/gcarroll/ruairicarroll.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/03. Is its parent directory writable by the server
From this message it really looks like some permissions issue is there something possibly on my server that needs to be changed
Thanks for you help
are you on windows server? I was facing the same problem yesterday and just managed to solve it.
out of interest what did you do
well I had this problem on windows and was’t able to upload any image or even import my local wp backup. I gave write permission to the site user and it works like charm.
You probabely need to check out safe mode settings and file_upload setting of php. Also the uploads directory should have 777 permissions.
May be this will be able to point out some direction
cheers
Only use 777 if necessary, and hopefully only for a temporary amount of time. See http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions
What the FTP showed is that your folders have the correct permissions. What I meant was now that you have ftp’d an image, you can add an image “from url” – http://www.yoursite/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/myimage.xxx
While the problem you are experiencing happens to many, it is an local issue so has to be solved by the process of elimination. In the interim, you can use images in your post with the ftp method.
What can cause the problem (to name a few) – plugins (you should disable all and see if it works), theme (you should try the default theme), or permissions which seem to be ok as you can ftp but changing the uploads directory, as recommended above, is something else to do.
