   I am new to WordPress and could not really find a thread that solves my problem.

   I started a blog and wanted to create my own theme with a program called Artisteer. I was under the impression that I could upload a theme using an ftp client (in my case Wise ftp) to myname.wordpress.com. I tried passive/not passive and all sorts of different settings. That does not work although I am using the ftp client frequently to upload changes to a website. What am I doing wrong? Is it not possible to access myname.wordpress.com? Do I have to transfer my blog to a hosting service before I can use/change it?

   If you are using a hosted blog from WordPress.com you cannot add any extra themes. You will need to transfer your blog to your own hosting like you said.
