• hello

there’s no save button in my theme editor.

i could make adjustment to my files but i can’t save them. the only thing it says on the bottom is this:

If this file was writable you could edit it.

am i suppose to make the wp-admin directory writable by changing the permissions to 777 ?

any suggestions? thank you very much..

  • close! Just your .css files in wp-content/themes/insertthemefolder I think :o)

    just the .css files?

but i want to edit my php (index, sidebar, etc.) without resorting to ftping

You must have FTP access for this! You cant do it directly.

so it’s only .css files that can be editable..

and to make it editable, i have to change their permissions to 777

    just wanted to double check

In theme editor, anything that comes up on the right may be editable when set to 777 but I’ve never used it for anything other than the CSS, always FTP’d the other stuff

Try it and see if it works :o)

    Yep it works!

but i’m worried though, anytime you set file permissions to 777, you’re allowing hackers the ability to re-edit your pages – or some other terrible things, I believe.

Well I’m not very bright at a lot of this lol but afaik setting permissions to 777 means it can be written by anybody that can access the file (via some link to the server like WP or FTP)

If you don’t have Anon FTP activated then I shouldn’t think it would be a problem unless someone hacks into your WP or server first!

Someone correct me if I’m talking nonsense lol
