Can't Make Widgets Work With My Own Theme | WordPress.org

Hi, I’m still pretty new to WP themes so please bare with me here, widgets work fine on default themes installed on my blog but when I activate my own theme (I have made from scratch it isn’t a child theme) the widgets disappear including the appearance>widgets menu. There must be something I need to add to one of the theme files to make them appear?! Do I need to add code to the CSS file or index.php and if so what code? I’ve been searching but can’t find what exactly I need to make them work.

Hi Victoria248

You need to register your widget in your function file see the below link.

http://codex.wordpress.org/Widgetizing_Themes

and then you need to “call” the widget using the dynamic sidebar function reference see link below.

http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/dynamic_sidebar

Thanks for the reply Robert, I still can’t seem to get it to work though so I think I will try creating a child theme from one of the default themes instead (there’s quite a bit of other stuff still missing on the theme I added myself anyway and it all seems a bit complicated!) Thank you anyway though. Perhaps when I’ve learnt a bit more about WP themes/PHP I’ll try again!
