Can't login and "get new password" leads to 500 Internal Server Error (10 posts)

    Hey,
After a successful WordPress 5-min installation, designing the theme and even posting, I suddenly can't login.
Wordpress login page claims my password to be wrong, but it's been saved by Chrome from day 1, so it's the same password I've always used.

So I've tried to retrieve my password, and after clicking the "lost your password" link on the login page, filling the email and clicking "Get new password" I get a "500 Internal Server Error".

    - I've changed the names of the plugins - still failed to login - so I reversed them back.
    - Did the same with my Theme - still failed to login and my blog turned into a blank white page - reversed it.
    - Tried writing some code that I've found in a WordPress troubleshoot post into an .htaccess file that I've created, because no such file existed in my blog directory - still failure. I've deleted the file.
    - I've changed the wp-admin, wp-content and wp-includes directories' permissions to 755 - I get an ftp "command not understood" row on every line and the permissions stay the same. So still nothing, I can't login.

I've contacted my hosting that say my blog has an error somewhere and it's got nothing to do with them.

I'm going slightly mad.. please HELP

    Thanks,
    Michelle

    Hi Michelle,

Have you tried to login using a different browser?

It looks like most of these errors are generated because of an incompatible plugin. I know you mentioned you tried disabling your plugins. Did you try renaming your entire plugin folder to something like plugins_old to temporarily disable ALL of them. Then, refresh your browser and try to login.

You can rename your plugin folder back to it's original name afterwards.

Josh, you are now my favorite guy on earth!
I can't believe it. Thank you very much!
Can this happen again? Do you know why it happened?

re-activate the plugins one by one - testing in between
one of them will likely kill it again when activated
just delete that one when it happens

    Hi,
I now have the same problem after a new plugin installation. I renamed every plugin under the plugins folder, but I get an "access denied" if I try to change the plugins folder name.
    I can't login.. help? again? :)
