I have the same problem, but the patch is not works for me. I can log in but blank screen comes up. I tried the patch w/o commenting above mentioned lines without any luck.

I have just upgraded from 2.2 to 2.3.
Client: Linux with firefox and Windows XP with Firefox and IE6

@kkemenczy - My understanding is the patch fixes a test for cookie support. If you are logging in, then I am guessing that this patch or the lack of it is not the problem. I think you need cookies to log in at all. Did you run the upgrade.php - don't ask me how - it's explained properly on this site and I might make a mistake - guessing you did already, just suggesting in case. Good luck

    @alanfluff

I did clean install... both my internet server and my local server and I get this error on both. Is the path to the cookie problem? I've installed both on subdomain...

@miskolino - I believe 2.3 has an extra 'check-we-have-cookie-support' test built in (cool), but the test breaks if WP is not installed in the root. The patch fixes this or removes this extra test - not sure which. Sorry if this no help - I don't know much more myself. Good luck.

My blog is in a sub-directory, not root. The patch fixed this problem for me.

Thx Ryan for the wp-login.php patch. Why hasn't this patch already been applied to the download version of WP2.3? I downloaded and installed WP2.3 on Friday 9/28 and ended up not being able to log into my blog because of this cookie error that was reported over 5 days ago.

Deleting the lines worked, then did the patch anyway. Thanks!

Evjaka, just download the patch and drag it into your Worpress root folder--so easy even a girl can do it!

I went Here and downloaded the zip file with the changes for wp-login.php and wp-settings.php

i can login, but i'm still getting a white screen even for the index.php page... i have since reverted back to to the original files.

i've also tried to do the comment line hack, which didnt work either.

    any thoughts?

client machine XP with FF 2.0.0.7

@zmirza - Sorry you are stuck - my comment, further up this page, starting "@kkemenczy - My understanding is the patch fixes a test..." explains what this patch/thread is addressing - sorry it's not fixed your problem.

@hellioness - If this patch has not yet been applied to the off-the-shelf WP 2.3, then I am sure there is a good reason, but I get your point and agree, if it has not been applied, then it ought to at least be shown as needed in a way others downloading 2.3 for the first time would see and understand.

Fresh install of 2.3, in site root, but weblog is on a sub-page. Set up the weblog, added posts, and pages, and edited theme. No problem.

Browser locked up (Safari), so I started a new session, and this problem comes up. Deleting cookies and restarting doesn't help. Tried Firefox, and the same problem.

Downloaded the patch. Works now. Whew!

Tried with and without lines 24, 313 and 314 and didn't work - results only in blank page

WP 2.3 installed in root on a add-on domain

My problem was resolved after reinstalling the wp-contact plugin and downgrading back to version 2.2

I had installed locally with 2.3, it all worked fine. I then uploaded to my remote server, changed config settings and I had this error come up, then tried the two patches for login and settings, and got blank pages, then put back the old 2.3 settings, and then put ryan's login page in and now it works fine.

I'm new to wordpress just installed it last night... today I loaded a theme from the worpress theme website and I started having this exact same problem.... I got the patch but it didn't work...I tried commenting out those lines and it just got a white screen instead of the error. I tried everything I could think of with no success but then i decided to delete the new theme just to see if it made a difference and my site reverted back to the default theme and the login is now working. I put the theme back out there made it my theme and it broke again... so i'm just running default theme now. I don't know why this is connected but are the themes version specific? I noticed others on this board are still having the issue after the patch so give that a try maybe it will at least get you logged back in?

Thank you so much! commenting out those lines work for me!

"I put the theme back out there made it my theme and it broke again... so i'm just running default theme now. I don't know why this is connected but are the themes version specific?"

Certain themes are not compatible with version 2.3

    See here for details.

    Thanks

P.S Does anyone know if commenting the specified lines out of the login.php will have a negative effect on anything else? Is this a temporary workaround or a permanent solution?
