  • Hi,

Do not use use fantastico. Do a manual WordPress Install for your initial installation, so as to prevent errors in future upgrades through WordPress upgrade option in WordPress Admin.

Delete files created by fantastico from your hosting account and follow the steps here http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Detailed_Instructions

You will need to create a database and enter its database host, database name, database user, database password, etc in wp-config.php

You need to create a wp-config.php file by using the wp-config-sample.php
you can read about it here http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php

Others steps such as ftp files to hosting and activating installation script are found in the WordPress installation guide.

    Hope it helps!

Thank you. I’m using the detailed instructions now. I’ve reconfigured my wp-config file. Now I’m confused at step 4. It says to upload all the contents of my wordpress directory, but not the directory itself. Do I need to open every folder in wordpress and upload every file individually?

No, just open the WordPress folder and copy the files and folders (like wp-admin, etc). All the files within those folders (like wp-admin, etc) will get copied when you copy the folder itself.

What you want at the top level of your host directory is not a directory called wordpress, but all the folders and files that are inside the wordpress directory.

That’s what I attempted to do, but with my cpanel it won’t let me upload an entire folder, it makes me open folders and upload files individually.

Now I’m trying to use Filezilla to upload the wordpress contents, but can’t seem to connect with it.

    Hi,
You need to set up your ftp account in your cpanel first, and use that for your filezilla.

Filezilla will work better. Use the FTP address and password your webhost emailed you, or check in Cpanel for your FTP details.

When you get Filezilla working, be sure and upload full copies of all the WP files and folders, overwriting what you uploaded before in CPanel to make sure you’ve got everything uploaded.

Ok I think my problem might be with Filezilla. I’ve verified that I have a ftp username/password. There is evern a tool in my cpanel to import that information to filezilla directly. When using both methods, I am unnable to connect.

    Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

I’m still working on this, but wanted to present the problem in case anyone had a solution.

Edit: I’ve also tried this with Core FTP and am having the same issue. I’m disabled my firewall in case that was the problem, and still am unable to connect.

Thank you for all your help.

    Is it FTP or SFTP?

Ok here’s the situation. My domain name wasn’t working, so I used what the customer service recommended.

I finally got logged onto filezilla. Half way through the upload I would get a “too many users signed on to IP” message and it would stop uploading and just repeat that message. I tried setting the transfer number and that didn’t help.

Then I tried Core FTP. I was able to upload all of my WordPress contents to my root domain. Now when I got to “http://www.mydomainname.com/wp-admin/install.php” I get a 404 not found.

Ok now I used the fantastico install again and everything works…I’m up and running.

I just wish I knew what was going on for future reference!

I’d forget about the install problems and work with learning what you need for using WordPress itself. Later on, FTP and Cpanel, etc., will start to make sense in the big picture.
