I have a PC and a laptop both running Windows 7
I encounter the same problems on both.
I have deleted and reinstalled the program many times and get to the same point I am "using XAMPP for local wordpress theme Developement" written by Jacob Gube. I have used others but have the same problem.
The message I get with Apache and mysql running after I type http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.
•Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
•Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
•Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

I cant believe I can be missing something. ISS is not blocking anything because I am getting Apache on port 80 and Mysql on port 3306

Have you tried using EasyPHP? I found that to be far the easiest WAMP server to set up on Windows.

    Got the PC working.
I found I had saved to config file as a TXT but when I typed
    http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install
it came up with a differnt error message and it seemed like it wrote a file itself.
I have checked and it appeared that it is the same but it is working on the PC.
I can not duplicate what I did.
