I am trying to upload wordpress on a existing site that is already running, sarahscircle.org. I want to replace this site with the site I built on my host which is a wordpress site. Do I need to create a new database for it to run or can I just replace the existing site (which was created using a joomla template)? I don't know what to do I just want to install wordpress on this site.

Do you want the current site to continue to run whilst you set up the new WordPress site?

Yes, only until I upload the new site then I want to get rid of the old. I don't want to take down the existing site until I know wordpress is installed.
Then install WordPress in a sub-folder on your site. Later on, you can configure it to take over the root domain using this approach.

do I need to make a new database or can I just create the folder within the existing site?
In this situation, I would recommend creating a new database, yes.

sorry for all the questions. I am a novice to databases. I created a new database within my host and right now all it has in there is a wordpress folder. Do they need to be additional files? I just upload the wordpress as is.
No - databases do not have folders. Try asking your hosts for assistance with creating a new database.
