Support » Plugins » Can’t install any plugins

  • WordPress 2.7 installed and running fine for months. Have often installed and upgraded plugins using the automatic system, no problems.

Today, when alerted that I needed to update a plugin (Akismet), in the spot where it would normally say Plugin Reactivated Successfully, it instead showed a part of a generic error page.

After this happened, my Plugins page became inaccessible. I tried deleting Akismet, didn’t help. Then I tried deleting ALL of my plugins. That worked, and the Plugins (plugins.php) page reappeared, and all plugins were automatically deactivated.

However, now, if I manually re-upload any plugin to the wp-content/plugins folder — even the default Hello Dolly — the Plugin page returns the error again. I cannot access it to activate any plugins at all.

It seems amazing that an automatic update of a standard plugin would cause such catastrophic failure?

  • You may want to update the entire site to 2.7.1 or 2.8.2. It could just be that the plugins are no longer compatible with your version.

Any plug-in causes this problem, even the Hello Dolly plug-in that came with 2.7 — there’s no reason to think upgrading would solve the problem, it seems more likely that I need to solve the problem before I can consider upgrading.

Rename your current plugin folder to something like plugins.hold. Upload a fresh copy of the plugins folder from the core wordpress folder for your current version and then try again to see if it works or you get the error messgae again.

If you get the error again the problem may be elsewhere.

Deleted, re-loaded from source ZIP… no luck. The original plugins folder contains two plugins: Akismet and hello.php — even when either of those are present, loading the Plugins page fails. The plugins.php page only loads when no plugins are present in the plugins folder at all.

I wonder why even just adding one plugin — even one of those that came bundled with it originally — would cause it to fail?

Another thing that I just noticed is that if I try to install a plugin (e.g. hello.php), and get the error page, an 20+ megabyte “core.#” file (core dump?) is created in the wp-admin folder… the Add New menu option (plugin-install.php) also causes these files to be created.

Alright, if no one knows how to fix this — can anyone recommend how I can reinstall or otherwise recover my blog without losing anything? I haven’t got a backup of the database. Is it possible to delete the plugin settings without deleting the blog?

I’m having exactly the same problem. I’m almost done with WP. Any solutions out there?? I will continue to search the forums.
