[resolved] Cant install 2.5 (6 posts)

As a preamble I am very new to all of this so bare with me.

I had version 2.3 installed. I have not done much with the blog and figured because of that I'll just try and re-install wordpress just to get some more familiarity with the technical aspect. I chose to re-install version 2.5. I did that by going into my FTP and deleting everything I had on my server (which to my knowledge should just be the wordpress version 2.3 files).

From there I followed the detailed instructions on how to install wordpress. I changed the config file and uploaded that file along with all the new 2.5 files. When I go into my browser and type in my domain /wp-admin/install.php I get a 404 error saying the page was not found. How is this possible when I just saw those files uploaded through my FTP? I then uploaded a picture file and entered into my browser the domain /pic.jpg and that also resulted in a 404 error. I then logged into my godaddy account thinking the name server might have been screwed up but that was all correct.

Does someone know what could have possibly happened and if so shed some light on it? Greatly appreciated!

Make sure you are putting your files where your web-server expects them. That means putting files in your web-root folder.

Do you know your web-root folder?
Does it have the correct permissions?

Might see if you can put the script described in Finding_Server_Info and browse to it. Then that will leave WordPress out of the equation.

You probably deleted the folder that your web host looks for content in. My web host puts a folder called HTDOCS in the root and only looks there for all contect. You can actually put files in a higher level then HTDOCS, but they won't be seen.

I suggest you either log on to your online control panel and there is usually a "reset my account" option somewhere, or contact support at your web host and ask them to reset it back to defaults.

The folder name that's required is probably listed in there HELP or FAQ sections as well.

    Good luck.
