Can’t Insert Images As “Gallery”

After I upload images using the standard wordpress uploader, the option to “Insert gallery into post” is missing, as well as the images. The images are there but just aren’t seen as well as the button to insert the gallery.

I read quite a bit about problems with the uploader, but so far none of the trouble shooting options have helped me fix this problem.
