Can't get the widget to work on index page

Hello, I am doing an update of my website and learning wordpress at http://localfamilystuff.com/wordpress/
I want to show a feed to the community news at the top of the main content section on the index page, linking to the main page and having a section to submit news as well. I’ve dragged the widgets (FV Community News Form and Recent Posts) over to Top Main Content on index page but nothing is appearing.
Am I being dense?
Any help appreciated greatly
