When I try to open my home page or dashboard I get:
Directory has no index file. Browsing this site or directory without an index file is prohibited.
When I try to open my stat page, or a specific post I get:
Internal Server Error

Please contact the server administrator, cgiadmin@yourhostingaccount.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

????
The way it seems is that you are missing the index.php file. You should use your ftp-client to check that.

You are right. The index.php files were gone. Don't know how. So, deleted all the files, re-installed 2.8.4 only to find that my iNove theme was no longer active - the themes page said its template was missing (along with the default and classic themes). Now it is up and running again. But so it was last evening before disappearing again.
???
If you have uploaded WP 2.8.4 correctly then you are fine. Just don't use the theme iNove anymore because apparently its missing something ... such as a correct description in the style.css file or maybe the functions.php. Use a different theme and you shouldn't have any problems.

Default and Classic were also missing templates though (thanks for helping me with this - I appreciate it).
Mmhhh ... then you might have not installed WP correctly. I can't think about anything else. Maybe someone else has an idea...

It's been up and running for 24 hours now. There's some plugins that don't work any more but it seems stable so I think I can sign off on this. Thanks, again, do77.

It's dropped a couple of times since my last post here. After searching through the forums I've changed htaccess permissions to 444. See if that does the trick.
